Open your heart to Children’s Heart
More than 1,000 children with heart conditions are born in Romania every year.
The majority require urgent surgery, while others are either awaiting an intervention or need a second operation. Consequently, approximately 1,500 children are in need of heart surgery each year.
We need to enlarge the Cardiac Surgery Department at the Marie Curie Children’s Hospital, so that at least 400 children with heart conditions can be operated on annually.
The cost for making this expansion happen is around EUR 3 million.

We built the Cardiac Surgery Department at Marie Curie between 2009 and 2011, with the generous support of hundred of thousands of private donors.
The unit stands as one of Romania’s most modern medical spaces, meeting the standards of 2024.
Over the past decade since the department’s inauguration, highly experienced specialist doctors have come to Bucharest to conduct operations, while also training the young surgical team at the Marie Curie Hospital.
We initiated and funded these missions right from the start, and Globalworth supported us along the way, driven by the conviction that investing in people is the most precious investment.
Presently, the department is able to address the majority of surgical pathologies in children with heart defects.
The number of children treated at Marie Curie increased year after year. 302 children underwent surgeries in 2023. Literally, Marie Curie treated one out of four heart-sick children who were operated on in Romania.
We aim to increase this figure!
Waiting lists need to disappear!
Families should not have to travel abroad seeking solutions to save their children’s lives!
In practical terms, the expansion involves:
- Furnishing a second operating room
- 15-20 places in cardiac intesive care (presently only 6)
- 25 places in wards dedicated to the pre- and post-operative care of the patients
- Reconfiguring and updating the spaces and specialized medical equipment
The total area of the new unit will be close to 2,000 sqm, a significant increase from the current 745 sqm.
